Youth Leadership In Sports

Leadership has been called the most studied and least understood topic of any in the social sciences. Leadership is the process of providing direction, energizing others, and obtaining their voluntary commitment to the leader's vision. A leader creates a vision and goals and influences others to share that vision and work toward the goals. Leaders are thus concerned with bridging about change and motivating others to support that vision to change. As scholars state, "management involves coping with complexity, while leadership is about coping with change."

Leaders can be found at all levels of a sports organization, but not all immediately stand out from the crowd. Different situations, different cultures, different organizations, at different moments in their life, call for different characteristics and require different skills in a leader. A young person may be terrific at exercising leadership in his/her volleyball team, yet be awful in exercising leadership in another environment. This happens all the time. Some terrific young sports leaders exercise no leadership in their school projects or in other typed of clubs they may belong at the same time, not just because they choose not to, but also because they do not know how. Those other settings have different set of norms, different authority structures and different sets of adaptive challenges that the kid may be unfamiliar with.

On the other hand, power is the ability to influence the behavior of others. Regardless of their age, leaders exercise power and effective leaders know how to use it wisely. The types of power used by a young leader reveal a great deal about why others follow that child. One of the most useful frameworks for understanding the power of leaders was developed by John French and Bertram Raven. They identified five types of power: legitimate, reward, coercive, referent and expert power.

But apart from the different forms of power that leaders can use, there are several different characteristics that describe how effective young leaders influence others. These characteristics have been put into four categories of models: traits, behavioral, contingency and transformational. There is no single or simple answer to which style of leadership works best. Fifty years ago, trait models of leadership were popular. Gradually, as evidence accumulated, traits models were replaced-first by behavioral models and then by contingency models. Currently, the transformational model has many supporters, reflecting efforts of many leaders to transform outdated forms of organizations into more competitive ones. Traits models are based on the assumption that certain physical, social, and personal characteristics are inherent in leaders. According to this view, the presence or absence of these characteristics distinguishes leaders from non-leaders. Some of the key traits are physical, social background and personality traits. There is some common sense supporting the notion that effective leaders, young or older, have certain traits. However research hasn't proved that traits consistently separate potential leaders from non-leaders. For example, the physical characteristics of a young baseball athlete don't necessarily correlate with his ability to excise successful leadership later in his life; they relate only to perceived leadership ability.

Summing up, as today's world pace speeds up, the leadership styles applied during the previous century, or even twenty years ago, differ substantially from the ones needed to be applied today or in 2020. To illustrate this, consider the young members of a school baseball team who if unwilling and unable to perform, the school coach will then definitely have to follow the autocratic leadership style. As long, though, as the coach applies appropriate motivation and training techniques, the young subordinates gradually become willing and able. Hence the situation is changing. This denotes that the leadership should also evolve from the autocratic towards the democratic style. In a few words the leadership style should "comply" with the evolution of the outstanding situation. As the example illustrates, sports organizations, especially those that involve children, must confront the future and learn from past practices by continuously adapting to the new instruction programs that evolve.

Radio Controlled Cars A Brief History

Radio controlled cars first appeared some sixty years ago in the 1940s but the technology at the time was crude and, although cars could be run at speeds of up to 70 mph, it was only possible to run them round and round in a circle on a tether.

By the late 1960s however technology had advanced considerably and miniature solid state radio control systems became available. This meant that cars could be controlled from a control transmitter unit with remotely controlled servo-assisted steering, throttle and brakes. Radio controlled models could now be run on a race track rather than simply in a circle and the precision of control available meant that they could be run in much the same way as a real vehicle.

Despite the advances in technology during the 1960s, it was not until 1976 that the first commercially available cars were seen. Produced by Tamiya (a Japanese company with a reputation for supplying detailed plastic model kits), these early cars were very crude in mechanical terms and somewhat expensive but, nevertheless, they sold well.

Over the coming years Tamiya concentrated its attention on the mechanics of these early models and, by the mid 1980s, they were producing some extremely popular models such as the Grasshopper, Hornet, Blackfoot and Clodbuster with more powerful engines, working suspension systems and textured tyres.

This was really the start of the hobby radio controlled car as we know it today and quickly brought other producers into the market. These included Schumacher Racing (a British company which replaced the then standard solid axle with a ball differential, allowing cars to be finely tuned for different track conditions) and Associated Electrics (a California based company which introduced the model that quickly dominated the off-road racing market - the RC10 off-road electric car).

The 1980s saw a major shift away from what many described as "toy" cars towards truly precision crafted models of the very highest standards. Traditional manufacturing materials were dispensed with as were many of the established production methods. Chassis were now made from high-grade anodized aluminium alloy, which was also used in the manufacture of oil-filled, machined and tunable shock absorbers. Many components normally pressed from plastic were also replaced with high-impact nylon, including such things as suspension control arms and wheels.

Today's interest in off-road 4 wheel drive vehicles was also sparked during the 1980s with the introduction by Schumacher of the Competition All Terrain (CAT) vehicle which won the off-road world championship in 5 out of the 10 years following its introduction.

Competition is of course the driving force behind any market today, including the market for radio controlled cars, and for several years a strong rivalry between Associated Electrics and Team Losi (founded by Gil Losi Jr., a racetrack owner from California) led to a rapid development of high quality models, both technically and in terms of the range of cars available.

Today Associate Electric and Team Losi are still major players in the market and have been joined by others such as the US-based Traxxas company and the Japanese-based company of Kyosho. As these major players continue to compete against each other, and others join the market, so the market for radio controlled cars will go from strength to strength in the years ahead.

Checking And Charging Motorcycle Batteries

How are Motorcycle Batteries Rated?

The amp/hour (AH) capacity is the basis for rating motorcycle batteries. For example, a 12AH battery can produce one amp of current flow for 12 hours, or two amps for six hours. In order to calculate the amount of time needed to use up a fully charged motorcycle battery by turning the lights on, we have to take power in watts, and divide it by voltage, which gives us the current draw in Amps. Therefore, a 72 watts beam and tail together, divided by 12 volts equals a 6-amp draw. So in 2 hours, the 12AH battery is dead.

Checking Motorcycle Battery:

If you decide to check if your new motorcycle battery is done correctly, follow this actual factory-recommended service procedure.

If the battery is not a maintenance-free type which doesn't have a vent tube, unwrap the battery, unkink the vent tube and snip about a half-inch off the end. Fill it with electrolyte midway (between the high and low level markings on the case) and leave it undisturbed for one or two hours. Remember, the battery will still be at only 65% of full charge at this point. Add electrolyte again if required.

If your battery is a refillable lead-antimony type, it should be charged at one-third of its rated capacity in amp/hours for four to five hours to get it to full charge. Maintenance-free type battery should be charged with a constant-current charger that can drive the charge with as much as 16.9 volts. This should be closely supervised so as not to exceed full charge.

Next, recheck the electrolyte level and add water if required. Let the battery cool so the case contracts enough to fit into its typically tight little holder. Run the new breather tube, if the battery comes along with one, carefully through the original factory routing.

Things to Remember when Charging the Battery:

1.First of all, it is important to remember that Red is positive and Black is negative in order to avoid any accidents such as short-circuits and nasty shocks.

2.The charger should be compatible with the motorcycle battery, and give a greater output than the battery voltage but not too high.

3.Make sure the connections are clean and the electrolyte is at the upper level, and don’t fill the cells up to the very top of the battery.

4.You can either use an optimizer on the battery which can effectively switch off the battery when it’s charged and prevents overheating, or disconnect it manually.

5.It is recommended to put your battery on charge every two or three weeks.

6.An upper and lower level battery should have all the cells on the upper level, not over and never under the lower level.

7.For topping off the low cells, use only distilled water.

8.The minimum charge for a new batter should be at least for 8 hours.

9.If you have a dry battery, fill the cells slowly and leave the battery for around half an hour.

Planograms

A planogram is a diagram of fixtures and products that illustrates how and where retail products should be displayed, usually on a store shelf in order to increase customer purchases. They may also be referred to as plano-grams, plan-o-grams, schematics (archaic) or POGs. A planogram is often received before a product reaches a store, and is useful when a retailer wants multiple store displays to have the same look and feel. Often times, a consumer packaged goods manafacturer will release a new suggested planogram with their new product, to show how it relates to existing products in said category.

Planograms differ significantly by retail sector. Fast-moving consumer goods organizations and supermarkets largely use text and box based planograms that optimise shelf space, inventory turns, and profit margins. Apparel brands and retailers are more focused on presentation and use pictorial planograms that illustrate "the look" and also identify each product.

Since the purpose of a planogram is to communicate how to set the merchandise to increase customer purchases, much research often goes into the layout of a planogram. Attention is given to adjusting the visibility, appearance and presence of products to make them look more desirable, or to ensure sufficient inventory levels on the shelf or display. There are some consulting firms which specilize in retail space layout and planogramming. Some chain stores and wholesalers also create and maintain planograms for their stores.

Planogramming is a skill developed in the fields of merchandising and retail space planning. A person with this skill can be referred to as a planogrammer. (Source: SearchCIO.com)

Planogram Software
Because the most basic planograms are little more than text-boxes stacked and sorted, basic planograms can be created in any type of painting or word processing program or even on the back of a napkin.

The use of planogram software however, enables a user to do much more advanced and detailed analysis. Most planogram programs even automaticaly add product images to products, in addition to providing dynamic shading and labling to better show opportunities in the set.

There are four main companies offering planogram creation software (Source: about.com):

mockshop
mockshop automates the production of planograms for the fashion industry.

Intactix
JDA Intactix offers a variety of space management solutions.

Logical Planning Systems
Shelf Logic2000 planogram design software vendor.

MarketMAX
Provider of merchandise analysis, planning, and optimization solutions. Their Planogram Manager is a PC-based application for developing planograms.

Apollo
Apollo is a space management software that has been around for over 20 years. It is a product of Information Resources. the site of one of their distributor's, MEMRB, is more informative, though.

Spacemate
Ingen Spacemate is software for creating, viewing and editing planograms. Various rules can be applied to the products in order to produce an optimal planogram.

Best Rv And Motorcycle Batteries For Traveling

Many people enjoy traveling in an RV or on a motorcycle on vacation. Reliable power is essential to the success of a trip involving a motorized vehicle. Several types of RV batteries and motorcycle batteries are available.

A reliable power source is especially important if you're on a cross country trip or any trip that requires you to be gone overnight or for several days. Knowing what type of battery best suits the vehicle you travel in or on is essential.

You need a power source you know is reliable and has longevity on its side. You want one that is proven trusted and is good for whatever the climatic conditions. You need to know your power source is reliable whether you're going to be in hot or cold climates or a variety.

AGM

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat. This type requires no water addition. It uses an extremely absorbent separator holding the electrolytes like a sponge. The separator is made from microfibers made of spun-glass, that aren't woven.

These operate on the principle of oxygen recombination. Valves regulate the gases that produce oxygen. This process turns the oxygen back into water. Oxygen is then recombined to eliminate the need for water addition during the life of the battery.

The AGM, being highly porous leads to the internal cell having a lower resistance. Lower resistance allows it to deliver a better quality performance. These are often used in motorcycles, RVs, boats, portable tools, and as backup power systems.

Advantages Of AGM

No Spill: AGMs contain electrolytes (acid) within glass mats; they do not spill, even if they are broken. They have no water to spill out, even if they are overcharged. The hydrogen emission is well below the maximum of 4% that's specified when using in a small, enclosed space.

No Freeze: The AGM also typically immune from the damages of freezing, because there is no liquid to expand or freeze. The AGM is non-hazardous and perfect for those who travel frequently.

Low Self-Discharge: AGMs have a very low rate of self-discharge. The normal rate for them is 1% to 3% per month. This means that your RV batteries or motorcycle batteries can sit much longer without needing to be recharged. This is not typical of most standard types.

Rugged and Durable: AGMs are both tightly mounted and packed. They withstand vibrations and shock better than most standard types. Off-road motorcycle riders will enjoy this fact. The reliability and durability is hard to find elsewhere.

Main Advantages Of An AGM In A Nutshell

No maintenance. Each is tightly and completely sealed against spills, hydrogen leaks, and fumes. They can survive most freezes; they're long lasting, and maintain a low discharge. They do cost more than an average battery upfront, but you're purchasing additional protection and value.

Gel And Flooded

Two other types of battery are gel cell and flooded, or wet cells. Flooded are the most common type used today but they do have their drawbacks. The plastic containers may be punctured if not protected. They are not sealed, so care is needed to ensure fluid does not come into contact with the skin.

Flooded types offer the most size and design options. They may be refilled with electrolyte if required. Take care not to overcharge.

Gel cells require a slightly lower charge voltage than flooded cells. The charging process happens more quickly, so charging times need to be adjusted accordingly.

Trusted and reliable motorcycle batteries and RV batteries are a must for people who enjoy travel. You never know where, when or if you will find what you need out on the road. Choose the best power source for your needs and always travel safely.

Making Your Home Solar Powered

Many Americans have decided to become more energy independent, and want to play a part in avoiding a very foreseeable energy crisis. They've decided to go solar. Creating a solar powered home is an endeavor that requires an initial investment, but the costs are being lowered everyday. Solar power provides long term benefits. Not just for the home owner, but the environment too.

Now that solar power is more efficient, you can reduce or even eliminate your electric bill, increase your home's value and contribute to a cleaner environment, all at the same time. It's a great time to join the move to renewable energy resources, and the perfect time to take advantage of the generous government and local utility financial incentives that can cut thousands of dollars off the price. And now that solar power is becoming even more main stream, it is growing in accessibility. Manufacturers of solar powered products have realized the potential for a solar age, and are creating new options for those who are considering a solar powered lifestyle. If you are ready to step into the solar age, you are probably wondering how and where to begin. Below is a list of ways to make your home a solar one.

Solar Attic Fans- Solar attic fans are a great example of a simple way to make your home more energy efficient without spending a lot of money. The need for air conditioning is reduced by venting hot air out of your attic. Installing a solar attic fan may also increase the life of your roof materials by keeping them at a lower temperature which also reduces moisture buildup in your attic. This prevents mold and rot in your home, and can also reduce allergens and pollution.

Solar Heating- Solar heating systems are composed of solar thermal collectors, a fluid system to move the heat to its point of usage, and a reservoir for heat storage. The systems may be used to heat domestic hot water, swimming pool water, or for space heating. If you live in the southern half of the United States or in an equally sunny area you could potentially save between 50% and 80% on your water heating by implementing a solar hot water heater. The initial cost is hefty, but depending on how you use it, the system may pay for itself in as little as five years. The return is greater when you factor in rebates and incentives offered by states and local governments.

Solar Pumps- Depending on where you live, especially in remote areas, the cost of traditional water piping may be exorbitant. Unless you install a solar water pump. A solar power panel collects solar energy and powers a battery which can keep a consistent and plentiful water supply.

Solar Paneling-The most obvious way to break in to the solar age is to install solar panel cells on your roof. Solar cells, also known as PV cells, or Photovoltaics, come in many sizes, colors, and performance characteristics, made to fit a variety of homes and lifestyles. Another important factor to consider is that when PV panels are used in conjunction with energy efficient appliances, not as many panels may be needed to power your home! Large scale home improvement stores, as well as smaller, independent energy groups, offer installation. But if you are a savvy do-it-yourselfer, you may decide to undertake the project on your own!

But don't bust out the screwdriver just yet. Whether you do it yourself, or hire someone to do it for you, there are a couple of technicalities to be seen to before solarizing your home. Such as building permits. In order to legally install renewable energy sources in your home, you must contact your city or county building permit agency to obtain permission. You will be able to learn about requirements specific to your neighborhood. Don't forget about property and sales taxes. Depending on what state you live in, you may or may not be exempt from these when it comes to the purchase of your renewable energy system.

Although it is not difficult to keep up your solar systems, frequency of replacement should be considered. Solar thermal systems need valves replaced every 3-5 years and storage tanks replaced every 10 years. Luckily, solar PV systems typically do not require maintenance, other than a yearly cleaning of the solar panels. PV panel life is typically 25 years.

Solar Energy And The Environment

What's the force behind the presence of life? Who controls the earth's climate? Is there a factor that contributes to the greenery around us? Solar energy or the light and heat radiations from the sun is the driving power behind these life processes.

Using solar energy has proved use a lot of economic and environmental benefits which contribute to a healthy and secure future at the conclusion of waking time. Let us take a stroll down the solar path and understand its nature.

Sun light is the foremost natural resource that is converted into electricity. Rather than using expensive natural gas, oil, coal or wood for meeting energy requirements, you save on a huge number of money and electricity by utilizing the renewable solar energy. Solar energy is tapped by thermal devices or various technologies in order to conserve power and utilize it to serve a multitude of purposes. Solar energy can be utilized for industrial production, material testing, smelting, to heat up water, cook food, distill and disinfect water for drinking purposes, plus much more.

No other energy is often as environment-friendly as the Solar Energy. This natural resource does not pollute the air when being converted into electricity by solar panels or other thermal devices. Industrial or electric power plants which run on electricity produce carbon emissions that pose as a hazard for the environment and all the living beings. If you're concerned about the serious effects of Global Warming, think again. Solar energy is the savior here as no produces greenhouse effect which is the major cause of global warming.

Solar energy can be found in abundance. Of course, the sun shines bright every morning. It could be a wise decision if we decide to utilize the sunny days to tap this natural resource to fuel our residential, commercial, agricultural, horticultural (and much more) needs every day. You simply need to indulge in a one-time investment to install solar energy systems at home. Though it requires more space, these solar energy systems are fixed and needn't be moved around. Moreover, you save on the maintenance costs. Just be sure that the solar energy system is working enough to gather all the solar energy to run your household.

Affordable option, the solar electricity concept delivers high quality lighting to brighten up your homes. Solar electricity can also run radio, television and other electrical gadgets. This option also reduces you want to use batteries to run flashlights and radios. Certain batteries are not recyclable and poison the atmosphere when discarded. Moreover, the batteries are not shipped cheap. Overall, usage of solar energy avoids you from going overboard the monthly budget while keeping the environment healthy.

How To Set Up And Run Motorcycle Salvage Yards

For some people, fun is literally running Motorcycle Salvage Yards. This is because running Motorcycle Salvage Yards allows them to stay in constant touch with their motorcycle-mechanic side. Motorcycles, to such people, are like a disease to a doctor – there is always that intellectual curiosity about why this part works this way and how the teeny-tiny parts work in conjunction with one another to make a fast, sleek machine that can go from zero to 100 kph in 10 seconds (without you crashing it into a tree, that is.) But how does one set up and run Motorcycle Salvage Yards anyway?

To set up and run Motorcycle Salvage Yards, you need to figure out how much you can comfortably invest into this business without going bankrupt if the market proves to be weak or zero for you. For one thing, you need a sizeable piece of idle land that you can convert into your own Motorcycle Salvage Yard. You need to then build enclosed structures where you will stock your Motorcycle Salvage parts and motorcycles so that they’re not at the mercy of the elements (particularly water.) You may need to hire people who will work on the machines for you while you run your Motorcycle Salvage company. You may need office staff like a secretary, and an accountant to man the company offices for you while you deal with clients.

You get your Motorcycle Salvage parts and motorcycles from Insurance Companies who will sell these vehicles to you so that they can recoup the insurance payout to their own insurance clients. This is where your motorcycle-mechanic side has to be very astute, diligently examining each of the Motorcycle Salvage parts and motorcycles you are to buy to make sure your own clients will not be disappointed over the quality of the Motorcycle Salvage parts and motorcycles that you will eventually be offering to them. If you are planning to make your Motorcycle Salvage Yard a relatively big business, obviously you cannot examine each of the Motorcycle Salvage parts and motorcycles on your own so that then means hiring very good mechanics. These mechanics will be the lifeblood of your business because a client can forgive a secretarial error, maybe even an accountancy error, but never a mechanical error when it comes to the Motorcycle Salvage parts and motorcycles that the client buys.

Why is it so important to be scrupulous with the mechanical checks on the parts and motorcycles? First of all, would you yourself get on a motorcycle that you know had sub-standard parts and was sloppily put together? Obviously, if you want to live longer, you wouldn’t. Same goes for your clients – neither would they ride a dangerous machine like a motorcycle that was based on sub-standard parts and was not well put together. For your clients to spread good feedback about your business to their own friends, family and colleagues (and thus bring in more business your way), you should really invest in excellent training for your own company mechanics.
